The Mac mini 2020 is powered by Apples first generation 5 nanometer 3.2GHz SoC (system on a chip) known as the “M1”. The M1 processor is built specifically for the Mac and all 2020 Mac Minis are shipped with an 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU and 16-core Neural engine processor as standard. The M1’s CPU is made up of 4 high-performance and 4 high-efficiency cores. The 4 high-performance cores have 12MB of level 2 cache and the 4 high-efficiency cores have 4MB of level 2 cache. The M1 chip can be configured with 8GB of 16GB of high-performance unified memory which is integrated into the SoC which allows the entire system to take advantage of the system memory. Apple have also replaced the ‘T2’ chip which was present on older generations of Intel Mac machines and it has now been integrated into the Secure Enclave which is built right into the SoC. The M1 chip also has the SSD controller, image signal processor, encode/decode engines, Thunderbolt/USB 4 controller and Gen 4 PCI express built into the processor.

The Mac mini M1 can be configured with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB of embedded NVMe storage at the time of purchase. The Mac mini M1 shipped with two ThunderBolt 3/USB 4 ports (supports up to 40Gbps via Thunderbolt/USB 4 or up to 10Gbps via USB 3.1 Gen 2), two USB-A (Up to 5Gbps) ports, HDMi, Gigabit Ethernet (Upgradeable to 10 Gigabit Ethernet at the time of purchase) and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Mac mini M1 was shipped with WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.0. The Mac mini M1 can support one 4k display at ‘4096 by 2160’ pixels at 60Hz via HDMI or one 6k display at ‘6016 by 3384’ pixels at 60Hz via Thunderbolt.
