This is an adapter so you can use a a UHDTV (ultra high definition 4K TV) with your 12" Retina MacBook (only has USB-C, not thunderbolt 3), 13" and 15" 2016 and later MacBook Pro, and iMacs from 2017 and later.
The 12" Retina MacBook can output to a max of 3840x2160, which is above UHDTV standard, but cannot output to the DCI-4K standards, which are over 4000 pixels wide.
